Ahoti for Women in Israel

Ahoti movement emerged form the "Mizrahi" feminist activists. The term "Mizrahi" stands for Oriental in Hebrew, and implies the ethnic characteristics of Middle Eastern, African and Asian, as it stands in contrast to the European hegemony, which is regarded as "Ashkenazi". The "Mizrahim" presents an alternative to this European cultural and Socioeconomic hegemony.

The name Ahoti, which means My Sister in Hebrew, expresses the spirit of the movement: Sisterhood, solidarity, camaraderie, equality and mostly a sense of family.

Ahoti is devoted to raising public awareness of Mizrahi feminism. In this context, we took upon ourselves to represent women living in the peripheries and disadvantaged neighborhoods, which were deprived of their labor rights, and their voices were not heard.

Ahoti is dedicated to closing the economic, social and cultural gaps, managing projects, workshops and conferences that reach out to women on the periphery, empowering them personally, informing them of their rights, and developing alternative economic solutions. Ahoti heads the coalition “The Year of the Woman Laborer” which seeks to protect the rights of women workers and create economic alternatives for women in economic distress.

Ahoti is doing its work among the majority of Israeli Misrachi women. Oddly, this majority has been treated as a disenfranchised minority. Ahoti promotes social justice, and struggles to end the occupation.

Our goal is working with Blue-collar women, deprived Mizrahi women, new immigrants, whether they are Jewish, Moslem, Christen or Druse. Assisting factory workers, low-payed women, unemployed women, while focusing on women from the peripheries or outskirts of towns.

In the upcoming year Ahoti will broaden the coalition work and will harness the coalition organizations (Woman to Woman, Haifa; The Voice of Women, Jerusalem, A Line to the Worker, Tel Aviv, Chaian, Eitach, The Woman's Lobby, Bat Shalom, Israel Women's Network), for actual cooperation. The organization’s representatives welcome this trend and the worsening of women's economical situation due to the economical crisis speeds up the cooperative work.
