February 9, 2006

 

A meeting with Sigalit Banay, a film Director and lecturer for a film course at the Sapir College.  The meeting discussed Arabic and Egyptian movies and their difference from the Western Style.  During the meeting, Banay's movie about Fayiza Rushdi, a Jewish Egyptian that became the Queen of Arabic music in Israel was screened. 

 

April 2006- Kimha De-Pischa-donation of food before Passover

Before Passover, a few single mothers approached Achoti and asked for donations of food for the holiday.  Achoti received a donation from the United States and made dozens of food baskets that were spread among the different women, who live in the neighborhood. 

 

May 9, 2006

The meeting was with the great Poet Bracha Seri, who is one of the first Mizrahi poets.  The meeting was for the promotion of her fifth book, Binah.  Seri red a few of her new poems and spoke about herself:  her childhood in Yemen, her struggle for acceptance in Israel, her sense of purpose.  Her book, Binah, is a diary a her journey through different cities, Sana'a in Yemen, Berkeley in California and holy city of Jerusalem.

 

May 31, 2006 - A full day seminar was held on the topic Women Trafficking in Israel with the cooperation of the organization Mimizrah Shemesh.

                  Crisis Centre for Migrant Workers.

10:30-13:30- Tour of the Prostitute Houses in the Neve Sha'anan

                    neighborhood.

14:30-16:00- Lecture of Modern Slavery from a Personal Perspective by Linda

                   Smith.

June 8, 2006

The Achoti Movement, along with the Goethe Institution in Tel Aviv, hosted the Iranian author and social activist Siba Shakib, whose book, Afghanistan, Where God Only Comes to Weep, the story of Shirin-Gol, was recently translated and published in Hebrew.  Shakib lived for many years in Afghanistan and presently lives in Germany.  She consults NATO regarding Afghanistan.  Her book, published by Carmel publishers, addresses the situation of women in Afghanistan within the last few years. 

 

June 12, 2006

The Achoti Movement hosted the poet Ester Shkalim, who compiled her poems into a book, entitled Sharkiya, which was published by Kinneret, Zmora-Bitan.  At the meeting, as well Ester Forshian sang for the audience.
